Alepotrypa Cave is Αλεπότρυπα in Greek. Literally meaning ‘The Fox’s Hole’
It is a Karstic, or cast cave and lake, located in the Southern Peloponnese region of Greece
There were a number of chambers and regions. The system stretches 300 m east-to-west, with six main halls that end in an underground lake.
Most of the chambers housed everyday life (hearths ,floors, domestic refuse)
In the deeper halls, and lake chamber deliberately smashed pots, exotic beads, marble and idol fragments were found
Other items like silver, obsidian and painted ceramics attest to trade.
It was believed an outer surface village Ksagounaki flourished
There were signs of megalithic structures, metallurgy and exchange of goods.
One of Europes largest neolithic mortuary assemblages (burials) were found here
More than 170 individuals, perhaps some were reburried from somewhere else.
Isotopic work on some of the teeth found, show people ate wheat and barley heavy diets
Neolithic Alepotrypa was a busy coastal farming village, whose cave system doubled as cathedral-like cemetery and ritual complex. A sudden geological catastrophe froze their world in place, gifting modern research. It has helped us deeply with its human snapshot of neolithic architecture and Greece.
