Most megaliths were not intended to enclose space but to mark a particular location, and to be seen from a great distance
They have their own special terms, as follows:
Menhirs: Single stones standing upright
Dolmens: Several upright stones supporting horizontal stone slabs
Henges: Circular ditches around which some megalithic monuments are arranged
Cromlech: A circle of stones
Dolmens were made by pilling huge boulders and blocks of stone on top of each other without using mortar. One of the most basic construction systems called trabeation
It consists of vertical supports called posts that hold up the horizontal elements called lintels. To understand this simple structure, image a very heavy house of cards. During the stone age, Europeans arranged post and lintel structures into rows or rings to create some of the most enigmatic architecture ever built.
No one knows for sure why humans went to the trouble of stacking these immense stones
Experts speculate that these rings and markers were used for religious rituals, seasonal celebrations, and scientific observations of the sun and stars.
