Long before paved roads, railways, engines, or cargo ships, rivers served as the highways of the ancient world. During the Neolithic period, waterways became essential transportation corridors connecting settlements, trade routes, resource zones, and ceremonial centers.

For early builders, moving heavy materials across land was extremely difficult. Stone blocks, timber beams, clay, food supplies, and tools required enormous human labor to transport. Rivers dramatically reduced this challenge.
