Discovered along the Seine river. In the Bercy district. The pirogues were found during construction work in Paris, in the 1990s
Archaeologists excavated the site, revealing several well-preserved dugout canoes. They dated back to the neolithic period, around 6800 to 6300 years ago.

They were were made from single large tree trunks, typically oak. Which were hollowed out, to create a vessel that floated
They varied in size, with some measuring up to 6 meters (20 feet) in length. They were typically narrow and elongated, designed for stability and ease of navigation on rivers and lakes. Builders used hammers, sharp stone tools and fire to hollow out; and, preserve the logs. It required considerable skill and knowledge of wood working. And, indicated a sophisticated level of craftsmanship.

They facilitated movement of people, goods, and possibly animals. Primarily used for transportation along the Seine River and other tributaries
They were also likely used for exploring, fishing and hunting. Providing access to aquatic resources and allowing for transport and trade. There existence demonstrates importance of waterways.

The anaerobic (oxygen-poor) conditions of the riverbed helped preserve the wooden structures
Along with the pirogues, other artifacts such as pottery, tools, and animal bones were found.

They are displayed in museums, such as the Carnavalet Museum in Paris
Ongoing studies of the pirogues contribute to our understanding of neolithic technology, transportation, and interaction with the environment.

The Pirogues de Bercy are a remarkable example of early watercraft technology. They will continue to offer valuable insights into the life and practices of neolithic communities in the Paris region. For quite some time.
