Hallan Çemi is a significant Pre-Pottery Neolithic A (PPNA) site located in southeastern Anatolia, dating back to around 9500 BCE

Considered one of the oldest known settlements in the region. Hallan Çemi showcases early signs of sedentary life including early domestication of animals, particularly pigs.

It is located in southeastern Anatolia, specifically in Batman Province, of modern day Turkey. It dates back to almost 12 thousand years ago, making it one of the oldest known settlements in the region.

It represents a crucial transition from a nomadic lifestyle to a more sedentary way of living.

The site provides evidence of early human activities, including the domestication of animals, particularly pigs, which were among the first animals to be domesticated in this area.

Architecture
The site features several building phases, with structures primarily made of stone and organic materials. The site includes semi-subterranean huts and communal structures, indicating a complex social organization. The architecture reflects a variety of building techniques and materials, showcasing the ingenuity of its inhabitants.

Artifacts found include tools made from flint and obsidian, as well as decorative items like stone vessels and beads.

Evidence of a diverse diet consisting of wild plants such as lentils, almonds, and pistachios has been uncovered, alongside animal remains from hunting activities.

Hallan Çemi shows signs of early trade networks, indicated by the presence of malachite, a copper ore, and obsidian sourced from distant locations
The cultural practices suggest connections to earlier Upper Paleolithic traditions, particularly the Zarzian Culture.

Hallan Çemi is essential for understanding the early Neolithic period and the development of settled agricultural societies in Anatolia and the Near East.
