In 1877, local Cretan Minos Kalokairnos, begin excavations at Knossos. But was stopped shortly after, due to Ottoman authorities. Almost three decades later, Arthur Evans had heard and learned of his discovery; and became fascinated. He developed a plan to dig deeper
In the late 1800s, during his first visits to Crete. He became fascinated with engraved stones. Which later became identified as seal stones. He suspected and begin researching a lost Bronze Age script and culture
Around 1900, he began formal excavations at Knossos, which quickly yielded the “Palace of Minos”
Evans, with the British School at Athens, dug out most of the palace complex.
Over the next 20+ years, Evans defined the chronology of the civilization, coining the term ‘Minoan’ and dividing its history into early, middle, and late periods.
He published his monumental multi-volume work: ‘The Palace of Minos at Knossos’ in four volumes, from 1921–1935. Which established the framework of Minoan studies still used today.
Arthur Evans will always be known for defining the great Minoan civilization, and palace at Knossos. In the early part of the 20th century.
